Critical MASS for the Visual Arts

CRITICAL CONVERSATIONS: SOCIAL PRACTICE IN VISUAL ART

Story Stitcher president Susan Colangelo will host a panel on Social Practice in the Visual Arts for Critical MASS. Panelists include Christine Illewski, founder of the FACES Project; Stefani Weedon-Smith, project director for the NCCJ, faculty and member for RAC’s Community Arts Training Institute; Marcis Curtis, artist and activist, involved in the Ferguson protest movement; and Freida Wheaton, owner of Salon 53, founder of the Alliance of Black Art Galleries, curator, and arts advocate.

Mississppi Museum of Art’s Project Innovation 

Twice a month on Thursday afternoons, fourth and fifth grade students from Project Innovation in Midtown join with the Museum for Artful Afternoons, sponsored by The Walker Foundation. Artist in Residence Daniel Johnson and Director of School Programs Dorian Pridgen facilitate this group to use art as communication and a strategy for achieving goals. All of our young artists helped to define and choose projects for the year and we are in the midst of our first one – Write, Record and Release a song.

1Hood Media Academy is a tool to help young people critically analyze messages, broaden their experience of media, and develop creative skills in creating their own media messages. Media literacy is a means of educating young people on the effects of media societal perception, and more specifically, on how it shapes the way young people view “reality”.

Since March 2013 Mobile Print Power has created public projects in Corona Plaza, Queens, as well as sites in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx. The group has published 5 books, including “Message from Corona Plaza” and “The Flavor of Bilingual Cuisine”. They have exhibited at The New School, Columbia University, and the Queens Museum. They also support local organizations that positively impact their community, assisting them with t-shirt and poster printing.

Arts Greenhouse and Mobile Print Power collaborated to activate the spaces outside and in front of the College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University during the 2015 Open Engagement Conference. Arts Greenhouse is a group of CMU faculty and students who work with local teens every Saturday during the school year in the University’s music recording studio to help youth develop performance and audio engineering skills. This iphone video shows a few of the teen members performing original works live at the event.
