A Place For Me  THE CENTER

#StandStrongStandTogether

Youth are at the CENTER of everything. They tell us what they need. Where they are in life. Where they are today. Everyone we serve has experienced trauma from violence, from poverty, from marginalization. At Story Stitchers, adult artists and youth collaborate to create new works of art. Creation and expression provide space for commonality and affection. Empowerment. Healing. Every photograph, every dance, every story processes some small piece of trauma. Youth reported that friends, the arts, leadership opportunities, access to mentors, and earning money are protective factors that help them make positive decisions. They told us, and we listened.

A Place For Me  THE CENTER

A place for solace. Support. Contemplation. A place for self-expression.

The interior spaces are being designed by me, the youth for youth.

“Story Stitchers and home? One and the same! Story Stitchers nurtures our best selves just as home does. Most of the youth who start off are lost, troubled or hurting and Story Stitchers helps ease those problems and guides them through a process of self-confidence building. Without Story Stitchers… without home, where would we be?”

Thank you Roland Johnson

Roland Johnson performing at StitchCast Studio LIVE!, Central Stage, on June 10, 2022

Saint Louis Story Stitchers was deeply saddened to learn of our good friend and mentor Roland Johnson’s passing at 74.

Roland spent time with Story Stitchers youth and artists working on Peace in the Prairie, recording America the Beautiful in our studio with 5 young artists and a remix of Missouri Waltz. Roland especially enjoyed working with Story Stitchers young musicians and spent time teaching youth to push recorded works to greater fullness through instrumentation and layering vocals.

In 2022 Roland brought members of his band to perform classics for Story Stitchers at StitchCast Studio LIVE! on two separate nights and also encouraged the young artists to take the mic and share a guitar with the highly experienced band.

Roland’s visits to Story Stitchers were always joyful and enlightening. Thank you for sharing your amazing voice, your musical expertise, your generous spirit, and for the beautiful music you left to us and to the world. We will all miss you.
