Peace in the Prairie spotlight on Moms Demand Action’s Be SMART

Saint Louis Story Stitchers Artists Collective presents Peace in the Prairie, an original presentation exploring the concepts of peace and violence, juxtaposing urban life as experienced by black and brown people living in the city of St. Louis, Missouri and the state’s endangered prairie lands.

Is the path towards peace through Missouri’s native prairies?

Peace in the Prairie-Earth Day’s focus on peace and anti-violence resonates with that of Be SMART, a national public education campaign.

Be SMART focuses on helping parents and adults normalize conversations about gun safety and take responsible actions that can prevent child gun deaths and injuries. We will spread the word of what each of us can do to protect our families and environment.

The Be SMART information table and volunteers will provide free written materials for adults to learn how to keep their families safe from firearms, how to talk with youth about firearms, and identify warning signs of suicide by firearms. We will provide education and awareness of child/teen firearm deaths and injuries, firearm suicides, and secure gun storage.

From 10:00 am to 4:00 pm adults visiting the Moms’ table will learn the SMART approach to saving lives:

  • Secure all guns in your homes and vehicles
  • Model responsible behavior around guns (including how to talk to kids about guns)
  • Ask about unsecured guns in other homes where children may play
  • Recognize the role of guns in suicide
  • Tell your peers to Be SMART
