I remember those days when we’d be in the sun, but you’d have that gun.
So I’d look into the distance and tell you there’s no need for that, we’re just having fun.
But you’d say, “This is what it means to be a man. You wouldn’t understand.”
And I didn’t.
I didn’t understand how a piece of Iron could make you more of a man
than what you already were.
Then it came to me days later. You were searching for something…
The Collective commissioned St. Louis playwright and Story Stitchers artist in residence Lauron Thompson to write and direct the Saint Louis Story Stitchers first play, Not Another One! A Play 4 Peace. The excerpt above is part of that script. It’s an except from a poem commissioned by Stitchers Teen Council, 2015/16 Co-Chair, member Emeara. Emeara is a lead actor and musician.
The powerful play is based on a youth-led discussion with police and civic leaders on gun violence. Topics such as trauma, legal rights, and police shootings were explored in an open and respectful manner.
Stitchers Teen Council Co-Chairs Aniya and Toryon will lead an interactive Q&A session featuring Lt. Perri Johnson, Commander of the Juvenile Division of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, following the 2:00 performance and a Q&A with the cast after the 7:00 show.
