Saint Louis Story Stitchers Artists Collective is engaged in gun violence prevention because it effects our artists, youth and communities. On September 17, 2015, during the Artists’ Panel for the Guns in the Hands of Artists exhibition showing at the Des Lee Gallery September 16-November 21, 2015, the Collective honored those fallen due to gun violence with a violin solo by Mario Miles-Turnage followed by the Stitchers Teen Council and music director, Mr. K.P. Dennis who together premiered two songs that we hope will make a difference. Listen carefully to the lyrics for St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce’s 10 Ways YOU can Combat Gun Violence.
The event was held at Steinberg Hall and sponsored by the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis and the Institute of Public Health’s Gun Violence and Awareness Initiative. Guns in the Hands of Artists was organized through Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans, LA.
K.P. Dennis dedicated the song “Gunshots!!” to his nephew, Jacobi Taylor, 1993-2015, whose smile was lost to the world due to senseless gun violence.
Additional opportunities for local teenagers to engage with the Collective can be found on our website: storystitchers.org. Stitchers Teen Council are serious teens making a difference through ART. Apply to join us!
